One more thing on that “photoshopped” comment thing

One more thing on the “photoshopped” comment thing:

ALL digital images, whether captured on a camera imager or scanned from film, need (at the least) sharpening. Even if you’re looking for that soft focus effect.

So in essence, ALL images need some “photoshopping”. Most non-profesional shooters don’t realize that when they shoot that jpeg, the camera’s software is doing the work for them.  For this reason I choose to always shoot raw so that the choice of how sharp, or how much color correction, is my choice(not to mention the major benefit of acquiring image in 16 bit). I try to remind my non-profesional point and shooter friends that they’re “photoshopping” too. They’re just handing off the controls and choosing to allow the camera’s software to carry it out for them…

Yes, I think so many of us belittled photos that were photoshopped because they were so much better than our own. Until we learned photoshop. Then we understood. Ansel Adams would spend forever manipulating images, dodging and burning. I am sure he would be a Photoshop disciple if he were alive today. The digital process still requires mastering the image capture. But the raw image is a completely unprocessed image and is often not pretty and not representative of what our eyes saw. Post processing is needed to just recreate what our eyes saw. Often I use HDR just to bring an image with large dynamic range back to what my eyes saw, as they do the HDR thing naturally. Post processing allows us to re-compose and then make art. The only thing that matters is the final image and the emotional response the viewer has when they first see the print or digital image. If the image provokes emotion, then it has communicated. And that is all that matters. You do wonderful work, Gary. No apologies needed. (We met on 5th Ave on 12/20.)
