What an Image does to you

Last week a couple walked up to a print of an infra red image I had on display. The girl really liked the shot but I overheard the guy say in a derogatory tone, “its photoshopped”. I had to interrupt and say “actually its not”. I then tried to describe how I captured the image trying to be friendly and non-defensive. It became clear to me that the guy didn’t believe me. His mind was made up. And even if it had been “photoshopped”, so what??! Still I kinda felt like I was being called a liar and it left me wanting to go grab my computer and find the raw image(not that he would have necessarily understood what a raw image was) to prove to this guy what I had just explained.

Later that same night, another guy looking at my prints,(I had 18 on display)looks at that same print and asks “how much?” Just like that, he paid my asking price and walked away with the print and a very satisfied look on his face.

Some people truly appreciate art, others try to analyze how it was created. As a photographer I constantly find myself doing both. ¬†Ultimately, its about what a image does to you, deep down inside, when you first view it. In that instant that it affects you, it matters not how it was created…
